Serious Water Concerns:
Lead
The US EPA requires municipal water suppliers to test for lead, but the greatest risk often comes after treatment. Water is sent out through mains and service lines that can potentially affect millions of homes that receive their drinking water through lead pipes. Because lead is an odorless, tasteless and colorless metal, it can go undetected in the water supply, posing a serious threat to the safety of drinking water. Even low levels of lead in the blood of children can result in behavior and learning problems, lower IQ and hyperactivity, slowed growth, hearing problems, and anemia. Lead can also be dangerous for pregnant women and can result in serious effects to the mother and her developing fetus, including reduced growth of fetus and premature birth.
PFAS (Forever Chemicals)
PFAS (poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances) have been widely used to make every-day household products such as clothing, carpet, cleaning products, leather, Teflon®, paints and more. Although PFAS are no longer manufactured in the U.S., they are still manufactured internationally and can be imported to the US in consumer goods and then enter local water supplies. Because of their strong molecular structure these compounds take much longer to break down naturally than other organic chemicals, thus remaining in the environment and in the human body for a very long time. These chemicals are carcinogenic and have been associated with a variety of adverse health effects including cancer, immunity deficiencies, and developmental effects in unborn children.
Chlorine & Chloramines
Almost every municipality in the nation uses either chlorine and/or chloramine for disinfection of city water supplies. Taste, odor, and dry skin are common annoyances from these chemicals. Although considered “safe” by the EPA, at approved levels, chlorine/ chloramines can still produce toxic by-products, like THM (Trihalomethanes), that have shown a strong correlation in contributing to different problems such as cancer, birth defects, and possibly heart disease.
Cysts
Microbial cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidium can enter aquifers, lakes, and streams through animal and human fecal waste. We cannot see, smell, or taste cysts in our water, and because these microorganisms are chlorine-resistant, they often go untreated. Each year, thousands of cases of documented gastrointestinal illnesses result from microbial cysts in water. Symptoms can include diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, and infection including blood poisoning.
